Passive Infrared (PIR) Occupancy Sensors

PIR sensors use a semiconductor detector to sense the movement of infrared heat emitted from the human body. As a person passes through the field of view, the sensor detects the motion as a change in the infrared background and responds by switching on area lights. After the field of view is unoccupied for a user-defined delayed-off time, the sensor will automatically turn off the lights.

They require an unobstructed line-of-sight for accurate detection. Generally, passive infrared sensors respond to larger movements and work best in small, enclosed areas where there are high levels of occupant motion.
